Education Beyond the Controller: Exploring the Educational Benefits of Esports

About the Session

Esports participation has exploded in high schools and colleges around the world. Schools are adding esports to their educational tool belts because it improves engagement and attendance and decreases chronic absenteeism and behavior issues. Creating purposeful play in schools by aligning videogame play to academic standards can be the magnet to not only attract students to school, but it can also give students a purpose for coming to school. Esports is creating a middle school to high school to college pipeline by offering scholarships that lead to majors and opportunities in technical career fields. Participants in this session will hear from educators who have implemented scholastic esports programs in their districts and the challenges and successes they have experienced.
